Terry James, the popular mayor of Blacks Harbour was confirmed July 31st as the official candidate for Charlotte The Isles (PANB). Her first riding rally was held at the Eastern Charlotte Lion’s Club in Pennfield on July 31st.
Everyone who knows me, knows I attack the issues on behalf of the people I represent. Whether it is jobs, education, health care, ferry service, property taxes, rural transportation, water use, or infrastructure, I have been fighting hard for years on behalf of my constituents in Blacks Harbour. Now I intend to win a seat in the New Brunswick Legislature so that I can bring my experience and passion to bear on behalf of all the citizens of Charlotte The Isles. Whether you are from the mainland towns or villages, our beautiful rural areas, Deer Island, or Grand Manan, this is your chance to change our future for the better.” Terry said.
PANB Leader Kris Austin can’t say enough about Terry James. “Look,” he said, “when I first met Terry I was really impressed with her energy, enthusiasm, and knowledge. But when I heard her speak at one of our conventions and later on Tom Young’s program on Radio 88.9, I knew we had a winner. I’m coming to the rally at Pennfield on Saturday in full support of Terry James and to let her constituents know what the People’s Alliance of New Brunswick Party stands for, how it will bring democracy back to our province and how we will support Terry and her people. We need Terry James in Fredericton and so do the folks in Charlotte The Isles.”
Terry James was first elected Mayor of the Village of Blacks Harbour in 2004, and was re-elected in 2008. She is well known for her strong work ethic and a fighting spirit that has garnered some critics. Terry’s response? “My role is not one of popularity, it is one of getting the job done for the people of Blacks Harbour. Today I realize that the job isn’t getting done by our current local representation in Fredericton and I want to go there to get the job done for everyone in Charlotte The Isles!”
As an MLA, Terry will certainly bring a wealth of experience to the job. She has been a director on numerous regional and provincial boards and committees, including the Charlotte Coastal Region Tourism Board, the Charlotte Dial-A-Ride Board, and the Charlotte County Multicultural Committee, as well as the provincial Income Securities Appeals Board. She is First Vice President of the Union of Municipalities of New Brunswick
and has actively participated in consultation of the NB Population Growth Secretariat, NB Self Sufficiency, NB Taxation and Local Government Funding, the NB Non Profit Sector, and the NB Poverty Reduction Plan. Since 2006, she has been re-elected annually as a Director of Zone 4 of the Union of Municipalities of New Brunswick and in 2007 was elected provincially by her fellow Mayors and Councillors as First Vice President of the Union of Municipalities, a position she currently holds. She maintains great interest in local industries and was an invited guest speaker at the Cold Harvest Aquaculture Conference, ”Community Development and Aquaculture”, held in Newfoundland in February 2006.
Prior to her involvement in politics, Terry assisted many people as a personal consultant, providing paralegal assistance in the area of family law for such issues as preparing and assisting in the divorce application process, child support orders, and preparing motions for variances of court orders, etc. Terry also assisted many through the complexity of the Employment Insurance and Canada Pension applications and appeals process, and insurance claims and adjustments. One position which Terry truly shines in, is her volunteer position with a local radio station, 98.l The Tide, where, for the past 9 years, she has developed, produced, and broadcasts a weekly radio show highlighting Eastern Charlotte non profit events. She has developed her research, writing and editing skills, and wraps up her show with her own opinions, entitled “My Thought for the Week”, an editorial perspective on local issues. Terry has held a number of bilingual administrative positions in the past, including employment with the Department of National Defence, Department of Veterans Affairs, and the former Fundy Hospital Association Limited.
“If the people of Charlotte County are as fed up with the high-handed dealings of the Liberal government and previous Conservative government as I am,” Terry said, “then it is time for a change and I am just the person to lead the charge here in Charlotte The Isles. I need your constructive concerns and ideas to help us shape our campaign and to form the foundation of a better tomorrow.
